The Undergraduate Council makes policy for undergraduate education at UCLA; recommends to the Legislative Assembly undergraduate programs leading to new degrees; authorizes, supervises and regulates all undergraduate courses and programs of instruction and preparatory education; periodically reviews and evaluates all undergraduate programs of study and all programs of preparatory education in conjunction with the Graduate Council; and sets standards for honors and recommends procedures for awards of undergraduate scholarships. For information on undergraduate course or program approval, please refer to the "Guide to Undergraduate Course and Program Approval."   For a general understanding for the routing process for evaluating proposals, please see "Procedural Manual for the Review of Proposals for Academic Programs And Units."  Procedures and guidelines are available upon request.

Course Action Request Forms are submitted on-line via the Course Inventory Management System (CIMS).

Subcommittees

The Council has four main policy subcommittees: the Committee on Admissions, the Committee on Curriculum, Committee on Honors, Awards and Prizes, and the Committee on Student Development. In addition, there is an Administrative Committee of the Council.

  • Committee on Admissions: The Committee on Admissions meets with the Committee on Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools (CUARS) to determine standards and criteria for undergraduate admission in accordance with the provisions of SBL 311.C.1; and monitors campus procedures for recruitment, outreach, and informational services to schools.
  • Committee on Curriculum: By delegation from the Undergraduate Council, the committee holds course approval authority. It will review proposals for majors, minors, concentrations, and other undergraduate initiatives before sending them to the Council for action. In the areas of innovative education, it will work with Faculty Executive Committees (FECs), with the Office of Instructional Development (OID) and its oversight committee, and with the Office of the Provost and other relevant entities.
  • Committee on Honors, Awards and Prizes: The Committee is responsible for the development of awards policy to further the aims of undergraduate education. The Honors, Awards and Prizes Committee will select the Regents Scholarships, the President’s Undergraduate Fellowship (PUF’s), the Teague-Melville-Elliot Prizes, and will interview candidates for other scholarships such as the Wal-Mart scholarship or Women in Communication Award.
  • Committee on Student Welfare: The Committee develops strategies and policies to improve and enrich student intellectual and academic life and foster a sense of academic community at UCLA. The focus is on undergraduate life outside the classroom and on developing connections between course work and extracurricular activity and between life on campus and in the community.
  • Administrative Committee: Consisting of the UgC Council Chair and Vice-Chair, the subcommittee chairs and co-chairs, and the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, previews the program review reports submitted by review teams and establishes the agenda for Council meetings.
