The Committee on Academic Freedom

The Academic Freedom Committee has recently heard suggestions that Human Subjects Protection Committees sometimes unduly interfere with people's ability to do research.  Though of course the Committees can serve a vital role in protecting people, it is possible that they sometimes go too far, restricting or delaying research -- and thus interfering with academic freedom -- even in situations where human subjects are not genuinely at risk.  We would like to investigate the matter more closely, to determine whether the reported problems are real or fictional.

Do you know of cases in which Human Subjects Committees have unnecessarily prevented or impeded research  by applying rules too strictly?   Are you aware of situations where, for instance, you believe that the Committees enforce a research paradigm that makes exploratory research more difficult, without any real justification?  If you have a well-documented case, please contact Phillip Bonacich, Chair, Academic Freedom, Sociology Department, Haines Hall or Bonacich@soc.ucla.edu  Unfortunately the committee has the resources to carefully examine only a few cases in detail.

Committee on Diversity and Equal Opportunity (CODEO)

The Committee on Diversity and Equal Opportunity believes that the attached document is invaluable in advancing faculty diversity, including the recruitment and retention of women and underrepresented minorities.  We invite you to click on the link below and review the superb recommendations contained in the University of California Affirmative Action Guidelines for Recruitment and Retention of Faculty.
