Staff & Faculty Counseling Center:  An Excellent Resource for the UCLA Community

        The UCLA Staff & Faculty Counseling Center (SFCC) has been in existence for twenty-one years.  Despite its long tenure of service, a recent survey of all faculty has revealed that, of those responding to the survey, fully 64% did not know about the SFCC and its services.  “The Center is an untapped resource for many UCLA faculty members.  We want to change the fact that we’re one of the best kept secrets on campus,” said Jorge Cherbosque, Ph.D., who co-directs the center together with Nan Levine-Mann, LCSW.  “We want to get the word out to faculty so that they can better utilize our services.”

 

       The SFCC provides free, voluntary, and confidential short-term counseling and consultation sessions for all faculty and their family members and/or significant others, a stress management & biofeedback program, organizational interventions, critical incident stress debriefings, training on many topics related to building personal effectiveness and work relationships, work-life programs (on a diverse range of topics from stress management to working parenting, to eldercare, to pain management), and referrals to community providers and services.

 

The vision of the Center is to offer support for faculty facing the challenges that can arise in their personal and work lives.  SFCC's licensed counselors have many years of clinical experience and an understanding and appreciation for the challenges unique to academia. 

 

Some of the advantages for faculty utilizing the SFCC are:

  • To receive assistance identifying appropriate and high quality mental health providers from UCLA health insurance managed behavioral health panels
  • Assessment and short-term counseling for marital/couple and family issues
  • Preventative stress assessment and coaching to enhance coping skills and life-style choices
  • Consultation for academic administrators and supervisors facing challenges such as managing troublesome workplace behavior, interpersonal conflicts, and organizational difficulties and changes.
  • Counseling and consultation to help maximize academic success in areas such as overcoming fear of public speaking, writer's block, anxiety and procrastination, poor time-management, obstacles to taking next steps necessary to move academic career forward, depression and loss of motivation, pressures of tenure and advancement, juggling family and career.
  • Consultation for dealing with situations that arise with troubled or difficult students, staff, or colleagues
  • Counseling to assist in dealing with life adjustments and transitions such as arrival of new child, geographical move, retirement planning, health concerns, isolation, grief/loss.

 

The Staff & Faculty Counseling Center is located in the Wilshire Center Building, 10920 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 380.  The Center maintains the strictest confidentiality.
